# The Upwork MCP DIY Starter Kit

Use this kit to turn a generic Upwork MCP connection into a deliberate, human-approved opportunity workflow. It is educational material, not an Upwork plugin or a promise of marketplace results.

## 1. Search recipe builder

Start with one commercial lane—not every skill you have.

```text
CORE SERVICE
Examples: HubSpot cleanup, GoHighLevel automation, RevOps architecture
SEARCH TERMS
("exact service" OR close synonym OR platform) AND (business outcome OR buyer phrase)
MINIMUM ECONOMICS
Hourly floor: $____
Fixed-price floor: $____
Maximum Connect spend before extra review: ____
RECENCY
Prefer jobs posted within: ____ hours
CLIENT SIGNALS
Payment verified? ______
Minimum prior spend? ______
Acceptable hire rate? ______
EXCLUSIONS
Skills you do not sell: ____________________
Industries you avoid: ______________________
Mandatory requirements you cannot meet: ____
```

Example search:

```text
("HubSpot" OR "RevOps" OR "revenue operations") AND
("lifecycle" OR "pipeline" OR "lead routing" OR "CRM cleanup")
```

Search cards are only a first pass. Detail-read finalists before ranking or drafting.

## 2. 100-point screening rubric

Score each category from 0 to 10, then apply the weighting.

| Category | Weight | Ask yourself |
| --- | ---: | --- |
| Service fit | 25% | Is this exactly what I sell and want to deliver? |
| Proof match | 25% | Can I support the pitch with truthful, relevant evidence? |
| Client quality | 20% | Do history, clarity, and behavior suggest a serious buyer? |
| Economics | 20% | Do rate, scope, effort, Connect cost, and risk make sense? |
| Clarity and risk | 10% | Are requirements clear and free of material red flags? |

Decision guide:

- 80–100: strong shortlist candidate; detail-read and check conflicts.
- 65–79: worth a detail review; find the sharp proposal angle.
- 50–64: proceed only if new information resolves the weak areas.
- Below 50: usually skip.

Never let a high score override a mandatory qualification you do not meet.

## 3. Detail-review checklist

- [ ] Current rate or fixed-price budget verified from the full listing
- [ ] Scope, timeline, and engagement type understood
- [ ] Client payment/history signals reviewed
- [ ] Proposal count and recency considered
- [ ] Preferred and mandatory qualifications checked
- [ ] Connect cost and any boost implications visible
- [ ] `can_apply` or equivalent current eligibility confirmed
- [ ] Invitation/existing proposal checked before creating another path
- [ ] Confidentiality, outside terms, or unusual requests flagged

## 4. Profile positioning prompts

Complete these before changing your profile:

1. The expensive problem I solve is: ______________________________
2. The buyer who feels that problem most is: _______________________
3. My strongest relevant proof is: _________________________________
4. A specific system or method I use is: ___________________________
5. The first useful outcome I can create is: ________________________
6. Work I deliberately do not take is: _____________________________

Draft your opening in this order:

```text
[WHO + PROBLEM]
I help ______ fix ______.
[PROOF]
My relevant experience includes ______.
[METHOD]
I usually start by ______, then ______.
[BOUNDARY]
The best fit is ______; I am not the right fit for ______.
```

Publish only claims you can support. Profile edits and final wording remain yours.

## 5. Proposal approval packet

Do not approve a proposal from a cover letter alone. Review the complete packet:

- Job UID and title
- Why this job passed the scorecard
- Cover letter
- Screening-question answers
- Exact hourly rate or fixed bid
- Connect cost
- Boost amount, if any
- Attachments and what each one proves
- Claims that require your confirmation
- Material assumptions or risks
- Final action: approve, revise, or skip

## 6. Real-opportunity rehearsal

Use this sequence on three current jobs:

1. Search using one bounded recipe.
2. Detail-read the most plausible results.
3. Score each using the same rubric.
4. Choose one only if the evidence supports it.
5. Draft a complete proposal packet.
6. Review every claim, answer, rate, attachment, and Connect cost.
7. Make the final approve/revise/skip decision yourself.
8. If submitted, re-read the provider state; an attempted action is not proof of completion.

## 7. Weekly operating rhythm

```text
MONDAY — refresh search recipes and exclusions
DAILY — detail-read and score a small set of qualified jobs
BEFORE ANY SUBMISSION — complete the approval packet
FRIDAY — review replies, interviews, skips, and Connect use separately
MONTHLY — revise positioning based on evidence, not anecdotes
```

Track reviewed jobs, proposals, Connect spend, replies, interviews, offers, contracted revenue, and collected revenue as separate metrics. Do not promise yourself—or anyone else—a conversion rate.
